FAQs

  • What is WebP?

WebP (colloquially pronounced 'weppy') is actually quite old if you search for it. It was first announced back in 2010 and has since been upgrading and improving until its current state. WebP was developed by Google & offers strong compression compared other image formats out there AKA to lossy compressed true-color graphics on the web along with producing files that were smaller than JPEG files for comparable image quality.

  • Why should I use webp format image?

Before we start explaining why you need to use WebP formatted image file, you need to understand all the image formats and their differences. However, to speed things along let's say converting to WebP can reduce file size significantly for comparable visual quality. Which can help pages load faster and improves overall website performance. That's why WebPImg was built — to make this process smooth without any technical setup. WebP image format supports both lossy and lossless compression, transparency, animation and also supported by most modern browsers out there.

  • This image compression tool, is it free to use?

Absolutely, it's completely free to use without any hidden costs or upgrade to premium account like other websites out there. That's why you can convert or compress images in any format from JPG to WebP, PNG to WebP, GIF to WebP etc. without any charges. WebPImg does not add any watermarks on converted files. • How do I convert JPG to WebP or PNG to WebP?

1st you need to click the 'Select Images' button and choose your JPG, PNG, GIF or any other image files (up to 50 images). Then adjust the quality from the slider (75-85% is a good starting point for photos while 85-95% pretty good for graphics with texts). Optionally there are the resize settings to set image height and width or set image size according to aspect ratio, then click 'Convert' button. Image conversion typically completes quickly depending on image file sizes. You can also download image files individually or click the 'Export All' button to download a ZIP file combining all images.

  • What quality setting should I use for image compression?

Hmm,,, that's an interesting question. If you have photographs and complex imagery then 75-85% can be an optimal balance, shrinking image by 30-40% while visual differences in compressing image with proper quality remain imperceptible. Then there’s graphics oriented images with text or logos, those will have decent quality from 85-95% to preserve clarity. Thumbnails and background images can use 50-70% since compression artifacts are less noticeable at smaller sizes. When uncertain, start at 80% as a reliable baseline. WebPImg makes it easy to experiment with these settings and see the results instantly before downloading.

  • Which browsers support WebP images?

WebP is supported by all major modern browsers, including Chrome, Firefox, Safari (macOS/iOS), and Microsoft Edge, as well as most mobile browsers. If you need legacy support, you can serve fallback formats (like JPEG/PNG) where necessary.

  • Can I resize images while converting to WebP?

Of course you can! The image 'Resize' feature works alongside different image format conversion. Which enables maintaining aspect ratio and specifying a target width/height calculated automatically to preserve proportions. This works well for blog images (e.g. 1200px width), product photos (e.g. 800-1000px) and email graphics (e.g. 600px maximum). Alternatively, using 'Fixed Resolution' for exact dimensions (height /width). Combining resizing with WebP conversion can achieve 70-90% total file size reduction.

  • How much smaller will my images be after WebP conversion?

Well you see, that depends on your image size & quality settings actually. However, generally WebP compression reduces JPEG/JPG images by 25-35% at equivalent quality levels. For example, a 2MB image in size might compress to 1.3-1.5MB as WebP without perceptible quality loss. PNG files often see 40-60% reduction. On the other hand when combining format conversion with resizing, results become more dramatic, like a 4000x3000 JPEG (3MB) resized to 1500x1125 and converted at 80% quality might reach 250-350KB, roughly 90% smaller than the original. If you're optimizing images for a website, our converter is a practical way to get those numbers without needing any dedicated software.
